Story of Nasiam
Previously, Nasiam
was a small Thai restaurant located at Siam square which was the
most famous shopping center at that period (around the year 1967)
of about 39 years ago. The former owner was Makong Kingyi, a Hong
Kong living in Thailand. The restaurant’s name, M.K. Cafe,
was abbreviated from his name. At that time, Mrs. Thongkum Mekto
was responsible for the kitchen’s task as the restaurant’s cook.
After having operated
the restaurant for a few years, Mr. Makong immigrated to USA and
sold the restaurant to Mrs. Thongkham. She had to gradually pay
the price by installments. As the owner, Mrs. Thongkham supervised
the task both in the front and the back of restaurant. This was
the period that many students of Chulalongkorn and Thammasat University
usually met and eat out. They came so frequent that the restaurant’s
staffs nearly recognized every customer. Mrs. Thongkham was very
kind. When she talked to customers, she often called herself as
“aunty”. If some customers had eaten but could not pay for the food,
Mrs. Thongkham permitted them to pay it later. Around 1984, the
restaurant was expanded and had a branch located at Central Lardprao.
The branch was named Green MK serving Japanese food, roasted ducks,
and meet noodles for specialties. The popular Thai food were oily
rice with chicken (Khao-mun-kai), stew meat, Thai fried noodles
(Phad-Thai), and Num-phrik-long-reau. As a result, the business
was very popular.
In 1984, Mrs.
Thongkham let her 3-4 children to supervise the restaurant’s operation.
However, she still observed the kitchen’s task as usual. Then, there
was one more new branch at Central Bangna. The name of the restaurant
was changed to “Nasiam” in order to represent Thai image and to
recall the first already-closed branch at Siam square.
At present, the
branch of Nasiam located at Central Lardprao was closed in operation
and the new branch was opened at The Mall Ngarmwongwan.
